š It's Usually a Communications Problem
Most automation problems are really communications problems: intermittent links, mismatched settings, noisy lines, or unmanaged growth. The goal is simple ā predictable comms, documented topology, and diagnostics you can trust.
š” Core Concepts
Modbus RTU: serial, sensitive to wiring/termination/baud settings
Modbus TCP: Ethernet transport ā still needs good addressing and timeouts
EtherNet/IP: multicast/implicit messaging ā benefits from managed switching and IGMP where appropriate
ā Quick Start Checklist
Confirm addressing plan ā IP ranges, device naming, reserved addresses
Document topology ā switches, ports, trunks, uplinks, VLANs if used
Set timeouts/retries intentionally ā avoid infinite retry hiding faults
Add visibility: switch health, port errors, and device comms status
š First Troubleshooting Checks
Physical layer: loose connectors, shield/grounding, termination, cable damage
Mismatch: baud rate, parity, node IDs, subnet/gateway settings
Multicast storms (EtherNet/IP) without IGMP snooping where needed
