🌐 It's Usually a Communications Problem

Most automation problems are really communications problems: intermittent links, mismatched settings, noisy lines, or unmanaged growth. The goal is simple — predictable comms, documented topology, and diagnostics you can trust.

šŸ“” Core Concepts

  • Modbus RTU: serial, sensitive to wiring/termination/baud settings

  • Modbus TCP: Ethernet transport — still needs good addressing and timeouts

  • EtherNet/IP: multicast/implicit messaging — benefits from managed switching and IGMP where appropriate

āœ… Quick Start Checklist

  • Confirm addressing plan — IP ranges, device naming, reserved addresses

  • Document topology — switches, ports, trunks, uplinks, VLANs if used

  • Set timeouts/retries intentionally — avoid infinite retry hiding faults

  • Add visibility: switch health, port errors, and device comms status

šŸ” First Troubleshooting Checks

  • Physical layer: loose connectors, shield/grounding, termination, cable damage

  • Mismatch: baud rate, parity, node IDs, subnet/gateway settings

  • Multicast storms (EtherNet/IP) without IGMP snooping where needed
